New System Concept Statement, Models for it, and Sketchs

Concept statement for the interactive diet management system:

The interactive diet management system targets people who worry about their weight, age, disease, or other special conditions, and who live alone or are too busy to manage their diet by themselves. Of course there are many guidelines on diet, but it’s not easy to keep following them and users still have difficulty in choosing menus of their taste and finding a way to eat them. The friendly diet-planning robot will solve this problem. It does check user’s diet whenever they eat, and collect user’s condition such as their body, disease, temporary sickness like hangover, as well as temporal and spatial data of season, weather and user’s location. Then, it provides users with personal and seasonable advises for next diet in an emotional way with emoticon, voice, and action. Besides, it locates markets and restaurants for recommended dishes. Users now can keep in shape so that they can concentrate on their works more.

Thesis summary 2

<Wayfinding without Visual Cues:Evaluation of an Interactive Audio Map System-Esther Loeliger and Tony Stockman>

summary:

This thesis tried to demonstrate that all users no matter they are blind can improve their way-finding performance with positional audio cues.
This study is related to spatial knowledge and way-finding and auditory displays focused on ambient 3D auditory cues. Previous works reveal desirable properties of condensed instructions, topological relationships, being immersive, forcing to actively engage in the way-finding task and being in the context of game. Furthermore, they highlight that spatial auditory icons and callouts can aid spatial understanding. In this sense, the researchers conducted audio map system with several interactive function and many techniques to reduce confusing of sound. Then they evaluated the efficacy through conducting the game of collecting coins along the way with 4 levels. By using multiple one-way ANOVAs, the way-finding index (experience of navigating) and sonification index (impact of the auditory cues) showed the efficacy. Besides, the visual trace of participants also showed the same result.
I often like to think in the way converting something visual to auditory one or vice versa. I know the potential of this method, so I'm optimistic about this attempt to replace vision with sound.

System concept statement (exercise)

<Existing system>
Unmanned Book rental system is for everyone who wants to borrow a book.
Basically, citizens with membership card can rent the books simply by putting them on the machine in each floor of the library. Every book has a RFID tag, and machine reads that to deal with rental process. The machine also updates the information of a book's location, stock and whether it is reserved. This information is useful when the delivery system operates. If a library doesn't have the book the user wants, it will be sent to the library within one day from another library which has it.
By extension, the machine can be installed in other places, for example, subway stations. Commuting people can reserve a book through the machine, and after one day, they can receive the book there. This way, people can save time and enjoy reading.

 <New system>
Smart Phone Book Rental System is designed for people who want to select and borrow a book more easily.
QR code on every book plays a roll of providing information of the book including other recommended books or reference material related to it. Therefore readers can research the book they need more efficiently, and once they select the book, they can keep chain of reading another book continuously.
Also users can immediately borrow books by QR code, and reserve the book through smart phone app.
There will be many kiosks near the house or stations for receiving reserved books. The delivery system here works with combined data from adjacent libraries, and the books will flow to demand area.
Nowadays there are many people who are too busy to research and borrow a book. This system will foster the culture of reading and people can fully enjoy reading without wasting time for searching.

Thesis summary

1.
Bowen, S., & Petrelli, D. (2011) <Remembering todaytomorrow:Exploring the human-centred design of digital mementos, International Jounal of Human-Computer Studies 69>, pp. 324-337.

Summary:

The thesis explored the weakness and potential of digital mementos as human-centered design.

First, writers studied current ways for remembering and could get ideas for user needs and human values in autobiographical recollection. From this, they could suggest properties for digital mementos such as being easily accessible,  being self-contained and lasting long time.

Second,  researchers showed participants 'critical artefacts',which inspried them to realize broader range of human activities like web surfing or using apps. Then, researchers and inspired participants together proposed many design ideas for novel practices and application of technology.

Throghout this work, reflection was the main mechnism for designers and participants to understand digital memento, and the resulting proposals go beyond usablilty and suggest broader concept of human activities.

I totally agree with the fact that digital mementos require too much effort as I made one. It needs to be more easy to make digital mementos. In this sense, I think Txt box and previously widget 2 are good ideas because these require little effort.

Sabanovic, S., Reeder, S. &  Kechavarzi, B. (2014). <Designing Robots in the Wild: In situ Prototype Evaluation for a Break Management Robot, Journal of Human-Robot Interaction>, Vol. 3, No. 1, 2014, pp. 70-88.

Summary:

First, the witers explored context of taking break in an office and design of the break reminder. As a result, people wanted a simple robot with no noise.

Second, they tested the prototype and found out that users requested more interactivity and personalization

Third, they examined how social interactivity affects effectiveness in taking break time. The result was that social robots are more effective but work style has significant effect on perception of robots.

I could sense that emotion and interaction have become very important factor in products because people love to interact with others and personalize  their belongings. I also got to know that prototyping and evaluation is useful method to make better products in the human machine interaction field because it allows us to find out problems in specific design factors.

Self introduction about me

Hi! My name is Byeong-Joon Kim.
To begin with, my hobbies are playing badminton and other sports that I can enjoy with friends, and watching soccer game like England Premier League or Champions League. It’s always joyful to play with balls which are hard to expect where to go. It’s also exciting when the team which I root for wins the game. In addition, I like listening to rock music because the song often cheers me to relieve stress and regain the energy. Besides, I like watching the movies especially SF genre because it often inspires me to think about the future devises and the society.
Now, I will talk about what I have been through so far. My life was series of traveling. When I was a baby, our family often moved to many cities around Seoul because of my father’s business, and I lived in Bundang-dong during my elementary and middle school days. As I entered Anyang Foreign Language High School, my family moved again to the Anyang City, and now I’m in Songdo! Besides, my family traveled together many countries such as China, USA, Canada, New Zealand and many countries in Europe.
I somewhat regret not interacting with foreigner to know their culture. It’s because I’m the type of introvert people and I didn’t know that traveling was good opportunity to do that. But as you can see, I got used to the changes, and more importantly, these experiences gave me a kind of curiosity to people and their culture all around the world, though I do not yet deeply understand them. Also, I could recognize that there are many people with different physical conditions and interests.
As a result, I got interested in making products or programs that all the people can easily handle with, so I wanted to major in industrial engineering which offers a field of study related to my goal. Then, during high school days I concentrated only on entering the best university. I’ve never dropped the self-study time after school had finished, and I got good grades in almost every subject. I was especially good at physics and calculus which I liked to study the most. I could understand the nature more deeply through them and I found it fun to solve the difficult problem. In addition to high grade, I also participated in many scientific experiments such as molecular gastronomy, making aspirin, and many other ones described on the text books. On top of that, I balanced my knowledge by writing an essay on how Korean companies could survive in china market. I read many books and put lots of effort into it researching on this area. I tried to get different points of view through these experiences. Then I finally applied for School of Integrated Technology where I can take in-depth courses of various areas including my interest, with enormous amount of supporting fund.
Now, To be specific with what I like to study related to my major, I want to learn more about the new network that is integrated with human signals. Recently, as scientists and engineers are broadening their working area to the inside of human, water, and tunnels, they are facing the limit of the electromagnetic wave as means of communication. I want to do a research on nano-scaled Human implantable networks, molecular communications or new networks integrated with human gestures, brain waves. When I am freshman, I will get basic skills studying math, physics, and programming. Then, I will learn more about signals, sensors, and networks.
On top of that, I want to study under Human Machine Interaction(HMI) Lab. I think HMI is upgraded version of Human Computer Interaction(HCI) as nowadays the computer is all around the world, not to mention computers inside of machines. The study area of HMI focuses on various human-computer interaction on the mobile platforms, user environment in the condition of more than two machines, and the relationship between human, machine and society. In this sense, this area is closely related to User Experience. I want to study basics of service design, and I expect to learn some methods to measure and improve the quality of human experience.
Lastly, my dream is simple, making the world more smart. I dream the world, for example, where we do not have to look at the small screen of smart phone, but we can instruct it to do whatever just by posing gestures. Both of nano network technology and service considering UX, which I mentioned above, are required to make my dreams come true. The important point is that cutting edge devices are improving more and more everyday, but the services are not catching up the speed which allow users to fully utilize the devices. I want to give users optimum experience quality by balancing each of them, and I will develop the applications under well-being and entertainment trend. For instance, medical care system, stress-free interface, autonomous driving and automatic household appliance that would save the time for leisure. It would be also interesting to enjoy game outside, moving every part of one’s body as wii games.
